Introduction
Art and Culture are inalienable fundamental rights of the family of mankind. Human respect, dignity, peace, patriotism, care for individuals and enhancement of creative mind are most important results of study music, art, drama etc. Bangladesh is a democratic, secular society where liberal art, culture, music, drama is essential to develop the young population and help them to grow self-confidence and creative mind.
Project objectives
Considering the growing need in the community, Social Services and Management Trust (SSMT), a registered charitable Trust is firmly committed to promote education, art and culture, sports etc. for the children and younger generation. Therefore, the Trust has decided to establish a performing art academy by its own resources and to cater to quality training in the field of vocal music, instrumental music, dance, painting, acting drama, recitation for the children selected through screening by a set of competent and qualified faculties. The academy will run its’ teaching program under guidance of an advisory committee comprising eminent singers, dancers, artists following appropriate lesson plan manual.
The Trust has allotted eighteen hundred sq. feet floor space of it’s own property in the first floor of the House-12, Rd-5, Baridhara, Block-J, Dhaka. The required space for the academy will be ready by professional designer and carrying out necessary internal decoration. To start with, the academy will have one vocal music classroom ,one instrumental music classroom, one dance classroom with wooden floor and wall mirror, one art classroom and one recitation classroom. The drama room will be in a part of the second floor. In addition, the academy will have an administrative office and toilets separate for male and female. The building will be adequately air-conditioned. In case of power failure, twin generators will provide back-up support. Further, at the ground floor there will be a small auditorium.
The performing art academy will cater to the needs of the students from Baridhara, Gulshan, Niketon, Banani, Bashundhara, Banani DOHS, Mohakhali DOHS, Baridhara DOHS. The approximate population of the above-mentioned geographical area is 1.5 million all around. There are very few, if any, such facilities which the Performance Art Academy of the SSMT hopes to provide for this population.
The academy will encourage receiving students for admission between the age group of five and above from the area mentioned above. Students will be both boys and girls.
The full courses of each performing art will be a period of four to five years in consultation and guidance of the advisory committee formed for the purpose of ensuring a high standard of teaching. The advisory committee will help in recruiting competent teachers for each course and there will also be eminent guest teachers for each discipline/activity of the academy. There will be a defined syllabus according to which the 4/5 year course will run. In the last year the student will specialize in his/her area of specialization.
Dance of various forms such as Bharat natyam, kathak natyam, Monipuri dancel and Sreejonsheel along with modern dances will be taught. As in the case of vocal music all these mentioned dance will be taught in the 4/5 year course. In the last year the student will be able to specialize in his/her area of interest.
All the various methods of painting will be taught such as: oil painting, water colours and acrylic painting. The students will learn all.
The Academy will be open five days a week. Each student will be offered two lessons per week for a fifty minute period. The timings will be from 4pm to 8pm. Every class will accommodate maximum of twenty students in each classroom.
There will also be a custom built auditorium of an area of 1500 square feet on the forth floor. This is meant for mainly the students to showcase their talents periodically to their guardians and friends. Eminent guest artistes will also perform.
As mentioned before this Academy has been founded and will be run by the SSMT, the founders of Sir John Wilson School. Once again this Trust has committed to establish an institution of high standards in order to educate the students of the Academy in a vital component of their educational needs — the learning of their heritage, without which a person is not a whole citizen of the country as well as the world.
Eminent Artistes of the country are involved in this endeavour and will serve as Advisors to the SSMT by appointing the capable teachers while monitoring their progress.
